Chairman, Senate Committee on Foreign Loans and Local debts,
Senator Shehu Sani has advocated for an ad-hoc committee that would tackle
agitations of various groups in Nigeria.
Speaking with DAILY POST in Abuja, he urged the presidency
to set up a Committee with objective of encouraging debates and seeking ideas
to foster peace and harmonious coexistence among the populace.
He was speaking in response to agitations for secession and
hate speeches by groups and some individuals across the nation.
The lawmaker reasoned that such platform would engage the
agitating groups and make their grievances known to each other and the
government.
“The objective of the Committee to be set up by the
President is to encourage debates and seek ideas to foster peace among the
populace.
“The Committee will encourage the contending groups to shake
hands and eat kolanuts together. I will call this kolanuts intervention for
peace and unity of Nigeria”, he emphasised.
According to him, the composition of the Committee should be
elder statesmen and women of integrity who are detribalised and nationalistic.
Explaining if the National conference approach was ideal at
this time, the lawmaker explained that National conference takes time, saying
that the situation at hand now was urgent.
“We have emergency issues at hand where something must be
done. We cannot go to conference in an atmosphere of discontent and we can also
start studying report of last conference to determine aspects that are relevant
and those that are not now”, he maintained.
