South Africans Give Nigerians Quit Notice

The Nigeria Union in South Africa, on Wednesday claimed that two communities in the country, have asked Nigerians to leave their territories.

President of the union, Ikechukwu Anyene, said the Kuruman community in Northern Cape Province gave Nigerians till Thursday to leave.

He also said the Klaafontein community, Extension 5, Johannesburg, directed landlords not to renew the rent of Nigerians in the area, blaming them for the rise of illicit drug trade and prostitution.

“The Nigeria union held series of meetings with the affected communities as well as police and local authorities on the recent threats to Nigerians.

“We have also written reports on these incidents and sent to the Nigerian Mission and the South African police.

“We recommended interventions before the June 16 deadline to the mission and we are waiting for their response.

“The union is worried that any incident involving non -South Africans are attributed to Nigerians,” Anyene said.

2 Nigerians Murdered in South Africa

The Nigeria Union in South Africa said on Wednesday that two Nigerians were shot dead in Western Cape Province of that country.

Mr Mike Ibitoye, the Chairman of the Union`s chapter in the province, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on telephone from Cape Town, South Africa, that the Nigerians were shot by unidentified assailants.

“Mr Ernest Ughakwesili, 42, native of Nkpor, Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State, was shot in a night club by gunmen at Strand Area of Cape Town on Sunday.

“The assailants escaped after the shooting and the victim died before being rushed to the hospital,” he said.

Ibitoye also said the second victim, Chimezie Oranusi, 26, from Oba town in Anambra State, was shot with a friend in a car at Delst area of Cape Town.

“The friend is a South African and is still in the hospital receiving treatment.

“The incidents have been reported to the police and the national secretariat of the union,” he said.

The chairman said that the motive behind the shootings had not been ascertained, adding that the police had commenced investigation.

The Secretary of the union, Mr Adetola Olubajo, said the national secretariat had received the report of the killings.

“We have received report about the killing of two Nigerians in Cape Town, Western Cape Province of South Africa.

“The union`s chapter in the province is handling the matter while the national body has reported the incident to the Nigerian Mission in South Africa.

“We urge Nigerians in South Africa to remain law abiding. We also appeal to the Federal Government to continue to protect the welfare of our people here,” he said.

Nigerian mobbed to death, in South Africa

A Nigerian, working as an auto mechanic in South Africa was allegedly killed by some South Africans in Polokwane, Limpopo Province on Thursday April 6th, 2017.

The Nigeria was identified as Rasak Ajao, the Nigerian High Commission in South Africa has confirmed.
 

The High Commissioner Martins Cobham also confirmed that four other Nigerians were injured during the attack.
 

He said: “I can confirm that a Nigerian, Razak Ajao, an auto mechanic was killed and four others injured during a mob attack against foreigners in Polokwane, Limpopo Province of South Africa today (yesterday).
 

“The Nigerian mission has formally registered a protest to the South African Ministry of Foreign Affairs on this sad incident. The ministry said they would get back to the mission and that is the situation we are now.
 

“The mission has also reported the attacks to the South African police. Meanwhile, the mission is meeting with officials of Nigeria Union on the incident to decide on the next line of action.
 

“We will continue to monitor the situation and keep you informed.”
Cobham also told journalists that two of the injured Nigerians had been treated and discharged from the hospital while the others are still receiving medical attention.
