Saraki Denies Bribing CCT Chairman As Alleged By Sahara Reporters

Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki has denied reports that he bribed Chairman of the Code of Conduct Tribunal, CCT, Danladi Umar to the tune of $2 million to obtain victory in his ruling yesterday.

Recall that the Code of Conduct Tribunal sitting in Abuja on Wednesday ruled that Saraki has no case to answer in the 18 charge of non-declaration of assets brought against him by the Federal Government.
The judgement has generated a lot of controversies and comments from Nigerians.

However, an report by an online news outlet, SaharaReporters, alleged that a cash payment of a whopping $2 million went to CCT Chairman, Danladi Umar.

The newspaper claimed that a source close to the CCT revealed to them how Saraki and his lawyer, former Attorney General Kanu Agabi, had worked relentlessly since Saraki hired him, with the objective of stopping the trial one way or another.

It alleged that Agabi had formed a close relationship with Umar, whom he had hired out of Law School years ago to work in his private legal practice following his tenure as Attorney General of the Federation, AGF.

It further alleged that Umar’s brother, Sambo Umar, also worked with Agabi during his tenure as AGF.

Also alleging that a first meeting facilitated by former Governor of Bauchi state, Isa Yuguda in Abuja, Saraki reportedly offered the CCT chairman $2m to acquit him of the false declaration charges he faced.

The newspaper added that Saraki did not speak the words during the alleged transaction but showed the figure to Mr. Umar typed on his phone, fearing that if he said the figure out loud he could be recorded.

Reacting, however, Saraki’s media aide, Bankole Omishore, told DAILYPOST that Chief Editor and owner of SaharaReporters, Omoyele Sowore came up with the allegation after his demand of $1 million from his principal was turned down.

According to him, “That guy [Sowore] is a liar! That’s how he goes about causing confusions here and there with fake, indefensible reports.

“He told Saraki to give him $1 million which the senate President didn’t understand why he should give him such amount of money and what it was meant for.

“Refusal to give him $1 million led him to publishing reports he cannot defend. If he has anything tangible to back up his claims, let him present it to the appropriate quarters.”

Dino’s N50,000 ‘Anti-Corruption’ Book Is A Cut And Paste Of Newspaper articles – Sowore

The Publisher of SaharaReporters, Omoyele Sowore, has described the N50,000 book recently launched by Senator representing Kogi West, Dino Melaye as “cut and paste of newspaper articles.”

Sowore made the claim during the launch of Sahara Reporters’ civic media lab in Lagos.
According to Sowore,“What prof. briefly mentioned about the launching in Abuja was the book launch of Dino Melaye, that has been very gut-wrenching for a lot of us.

“We have been looking for that book in bookstores in Abuja, it has not been made available because we can’t afford it. It is N50,000 — just to buy cut and paste of newspaper articles.”

Malaye had on May 15, 2017 launched a book titled ‘Antidotes for Corruption’ in Abuja.

The book launch had major political gladiators from across the county gracing the occasion.

Among those present are, the President of the Senate, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Yakubu Dogara, former First Lady, Dr. Dame Patience Jonathan.

Wole Soyinka Cautions Sahara Reporters

Nobel laureate Wole Soyinka has told Sahara Reporters, an online newspaper to be more careful, especially now that its location is known.

Soyinka gave this warning at the launch of the organization’s civic media lab, located in Ikeja, Lagos.

The literary doyen made jokes about his presence at the event and congratulated Sowore, its founder for the feat.

“I’m here under false pretences; I was told that I agreed to be present at the launch of this media centre,” Soyinka joked.

“Nobody said I was coming to launch it. My hearing may be a bit wonky, but you know… still here I am. Let me congratulate you once again on the launching of this media centre.

“I hope it makes the media more careful, now that people know where to come and find you and to deal with you when you go wrong, and I hope it will be a genuine media centre, which means that when we stop by, we would have a drink before we get to more serious tasks.

“I hope the media, when they do their launch will not be like the launching with which the nation was treated recently in Abuja. I think this nation — you and I — have been slapped in the face by some of the disgusting reprobates that we know in any level of connection with power”, he added.

Sowore appreciated Soyinka for his presence despite his busy schedule, citing his responsibilities at the Lagos at 50 planning and celebration.
