The Chief of Defence Staff, (CDS), General Abayomi Gabriel
Olonisakin and his Chadian counterpart, Lt.-General Mohammad Ibrahim Saed, will
meet today to further strategise on how to improve ongoing operation against
Boko Haram insurgency and other crimes in the Lake Chad Basin region.
This meeting underscores the efforts of the Lake Chad Basin
Commission and Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) towards curbing
insurgency in the region.
In a press statement yesterday by the Director, Defence
Information, Major-General John Enenche, General Olonisakin stated that the
meeting would be a mutual consultation to enhance cooperation between the two Armed Forces towards clearing the region of Boko Haram activities.
On his part, the Chadian defence chief reiterated the
commitment of his country’s military to the common cause of fighting terrorism
and all forms of criminalities in the region.
General Olonisakin assured Nigerians and the international
community that the Nigerian military would continue to sustain and improve its
strategy and operational procedures through the Multinational Joint Task Force
and “Operation Lafiya Dole” to bring lasting peace to the North-East and the
Lake Chad Basin.
The meeting may not be unconnected with the recent
attacks by the Boko Haram group. Although the military had recorded successes
in its fight against terrorism, recent events have shown that more needs to be
done to finally tackle the menace.
