The Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT) has commended Governor
Willie Obiano of Anambra State over prompt payment of salaries of teachers,
especially those in the primary schools.
It urged other state governors to emulate the Anambra
success story to save the nation’s education system and guarantee a brighter
future for every Nigerian child.
The chairman, Nigeria Union of Teachers, Anambra State wing,
Comrade Ifeanyi Ofodile made the commendation in a press briefing in Awka, on
the heels of the recent nationwide protests declared by the union to demand the
removal of payment of primary school teachers from local government councils.
The NUT chairman stated that the union was satisfied with
the effort of the state government in the prompt payment and other
entitlements, even when 19 states of the federation were still owing their
teachers up to 15 months’ salaries.
Ofodile attributed the success story of the Obiano-led
administration to the prudent management of the Local Government Joint Account,
being administered by the Joint Account Committee (JAC).
“The position of NUT on this situation is very clear. It is
the responsibility of state governments to fund and manage the public primary
and secondary schools within their areas. Therefore, it should not be left for
the local government councils,” he said.
