2017: Anambra will Double its Achievements in Agriculture - Gov Obiano

The governor of Anambra State, Chief Willie Obiano has reiterated the commitment of his administration to ensure that the successes recorded by the State in agricultural sector is doubled in the year 2017.

Speaking during the centenary mass held at St Mary's Parish, Umerum to mark 100 years of Catholicism in Ayamelum, earlier today, Gov Obiano said that "the help given to farmers in 2016 will be doubled in 2017."

According to the governor, the 2017 budget captures all necessary elements that will double the assistance due to farmers and other investors in the agricultural sector.

"Last year we helped the farmers in so many ways to enhance productivity and increase yield... This year we will double our assistance to the farmers so that they can double their harvest," said Gov Obiano.

Anambra State Government facilitates agribusinesses by giving free improved seedlings to farmers; provision of soft loans; 50% subsidy on fertilizer; regular trainings on best practices, et cetera.

The governor also noted that over 80% of the paddy used in producing Anambra Rice which is now Africa's fastest growing state-owned rice brand, were cultivated within Ayamelum local government area thereby creating lots of jobs, financial stability for the people and more food for ndi Anambra.

Thanking God for blessing Anambra State with fertile lands, the governor reassured ndi Ayamelum of the completion of all ongoing road and electrification projects; the Umerum Gas Plant; and the Ifite Ogwari Bridge to mention but a few.

Earlier in his homily, Most Rev Dr Dennis Isizoh, the auxiliary Bishop of Onitsha urged the congregation to live the life of Christ noting that "only that will make us true Christians."

Bishop Isizoh also charged church leaders to key into agricultural programs of the government by setting up cooperatives which will be funded by the State Government.

Recall that Gov Obiano's administration had established Anambra Small Business Agency which gives single digit loans to cooperatives in the State especially those involving youth and women; with special interest for persons or groups within the agro value chain.

The highpoint of the event was the recognition and presentation of certificates to great sons and daughters of Ayamelum that helped in propagating Catholicism for the past 100 years.
