JUST IN: Probe of Emir Sanusi II Suspended By Kano State Assembly

The Kano State House of Assembly, on Monday, suspended the probe of the Emir of Kano, Muhammad Sanusi II.

Speaker of the State Assembly, Kabiru Rurum, announced this during plenary on Monday.

Rurum said the action followed the intervention of some prominent Nigerians.

The Speaker disclosed that the State Governor, Abdullahi Ganduje, sent a letter to the lawmakers to appeal that the exercise be put on hold.

Emir Sanusi II Explains How To Develop Kano

The Emir of Kano, Malam Muhammadu Sanusi ll has said that for Kano to regain its lost glory as centre of commerce, attention must be paid to education, agriculture and industrialization.

Speaking at the 2-day conference in commemoration of Kano’s Golden Jubilee, the emir said “China has doctors, engineers and economists who cannot utter a word in English language, there is no reason Kano cannot support Qur’anic and Arabic students to become engineers, economists and doctors. This can rapidly increase the number of educated people in the state.”

On agriculture, the emir urged government to ensure constant training and retraining of farmers with a view to equipping them with modern farming techniques.

He also called on government to ensure adequate supply of high yield seeds and discourage any policy that paves ways for taking away farmlands from the real farmers.

Turning to industrialization, Sanusi lamented that in the 1851, Kano was exporting 10 million pairs of shoes to various African countries, but today Nigeria was importing three million pairs of shoes from China.

He regretted that Kano State had seen the impact of some federal government’s policies on industrialization which led to the closure of thousands of industries in Bompai, Challawa and Sharada industrial estates in the state metropolis.

Earlier, the state Governor, Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, while declaring the conference open, said Kano State had given itself an identity in culture, economy and politics.

Government Should Invest In The Power Sector – Emir Sanusi II

The Emir of Kano, Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi II has called on both the Federal and State Governments to encourage private entrepreneurs to invest in the power sector.

He made the call while delivering a keynote address at a two-day conference in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the creation of Kano state.

NAN reports that the conference is part of the week-long activities organised by the state government to celebrate the anniversary.

He said there was urgent need to encourage private investors to invest in the power sector with a view to promoting socio-economic activities of the people in the country.

According to him, investment in the power sector was necessary in order to ensure economic growth and development in the state in particular and the country at large.

“We must invest in the development of Kano and the country at large.

The monarch, who lamented the current power shortage in the country, noted that majority of the industries in the state had collapsed or stopped production due to inadequate power supply.

He, however, called on the Kano state government to continue to give priority attention to education with particular emphasis on girl-child education.

“Education holds the key to our development. We must continue to give priority attention to the sector because it is the bedrock of any development,” he said.

“Government should also give priority attention to the agriculture and industrialisation because they are key to moving the state and country forward,” he said.

He noted that with the collapse of the nation’s industries, the country was now importing three million pairs of shoes from China annually.

“We must be ready to change our way of thinking; if we must be able to face the challenges and ensure economic growth and development of the state.” he added.

Emir Sanusi's Probe: NASS Has No Right to Interfere - Kano State Assembly Speaker

The Speaker of Kano State House of Assembly, Alhaji Kabiru Alhassan Rurum has said that the House of Representatives has no mandate to interfere into the ongoing investigation of the Emir of Kano, Malam Muhammadu Sanusi by the assembly.

Speaking exclusively to Daily Trust on Thursday Rurum said the lower chamber had no power to interfere into any issue related to traditional institutions.

Rurum was reacting to Hon Aliyu Sani Madakin Gini, a member representing Dala federal constituency at the House of Representatives, who called on the House of Representative to intervene into the ongoing probe of the emir by the Kano assembly
which he said could generate crisis if allowed to continue.

It would be recalled that a member from Nassarawa local government in the state assembly, Hon Ibrahim Gama had last week, through a motion, constituted eight-count charge against emir Sanusi, hence, the assembly constituted a 7-man ad-hoc committee to investigate the matter and report back to it within two weeks.

Emir Sanusi’s Probe: Reps Cautions Kano State Assembly

The House of Representatives hinted on Tuesday that it might intervene in the ongoing probe of the Emir of Kano, Malam Muhammadu Sanusi II, by the Kano State House of Assembly.

The state assembly had on May 10 constituted an 8-member panel to probe Emir Sanusi over alleged abuse of office and improper conduct, among other allegations.

The state assembly's action came barely weeks after the state anti-corruption agency launched an investigation into allegations of financial impropriety running into billions of naira leveled against the emir.

But coming under a point of order (personal explanation) at plenary, Rep Aliyu Sani Madaki (APC, Kano) drew the attention of the House to the impending crisis that the probe might throw the entire Kano State into, calling on the House to intervene.
